I have not used my internal speaker for a few months, but have now found it is not working when I tried to use it on a video call and then in dicate in word.  I have run troubleshoot etc and all comes back with no issues and says the microphone is enabled.  Can anyone help with this?

Thanks.

@JPS27, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the microphone not working!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your internal speaker suddenly stops working, especially when you need it for a video call or dictation. Let’s try a few steps to get this sorted out:

Check the Sound Settings:

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Open Sound settings."
  • Under "Output," make sure the correct speaker (likely "Speakers (Realtek)" or similar) is selected as the default device.

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers:

  • Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button → Select Device Manager).
  • Expand "Sound, video and game controllers."
  • Right-click on the audio driver (likely Realtek) and select "Update driver."
  • If updating doesn't help, try uninstalling the driver and restarting your laptop — Windows should automatically reinstall the correct driver.

Check Audio Enhancements:

  • In the Sound settings, go to "Device Properties."
  • Under "Enhancements," try disabling any audio enhancements to see if that helps.

Run Audio Troubleshooter (again, but with a twist):

  • Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  • Run the "Playing Audio" troubleshooter and see if it detects anything new this time.

If none of these steps work, let me know, and we can dig a little deeper together! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your reply and help.

I have been through all of your suggestions.  I have my output settings on a USB port for headphones, for audio transcription, and my input is now set to the Realtek mic.  My microphone is now being recognised and appears to be recording, but is not picking up my voice.

Thanks.

@JPS27, Thanks for getting back to us! I appreciate you taking the time to go through all the steps. I’m glad to hear that your microphone is now being recognized—progress! 🎉

Since it's still not picking up your voice, let's try a few more things:

🔹 Check Microphone Levels:

Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Sound settings."

Under "Input," select your Realtek microphone and click "Device properties."

Make sure the volume is set to 100%.

Click "Additional device properties" (on the right).

Go to the "Levels" tab and ensure the microphone level is high enough.

🔹 Disable Exclusive Mode:

In the same "Additional device properties" window, go to the "Advanced" tab.

Uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device."

Click Apply and OK.

🔹 Try a Different App:

If you’re testing it in one app (like Zoom or Word dictation), try another, like Windows Voice Recorder (search for it in the Start menu).

If it works in one app but not another, check that the correct microphone is selected in that app’s settings.

🔹 Check for Background Noise Suppression (Windows 11 Users):

Some Windows versions have noise suppression settings that can sometimes mute softer voices.

In Sound Settings → Input → Microphone, check if there's an option for Noise Suppression/Enhancement and try disabling it.

If you've tried all this and it's still not picking up sound, let me know, and we can dive deeper into advanced troubleshooting! 😊

Looking forward to your update!

Hi, again thank you for your help, unfortunately none of this works.  My voice or any sound is not being detected in any application at all, so my microphone at the present time is useless.  There is a setting in Device Manager that says it has not been configured - it was previously, as it worked absolutely fine.  I am having to carry out important team meetings on a mobile phone at the moment!

Thanks.

@JPS27, hanks so much for the update, and I’m really sorry to hear the issue is still ongoing. I completely understand how frustrating this must be, especially when you rely on your mic for important meetings.

Since your mic shows as not configured in Device Manager, that’s definitely something we need to dig into.

Here’s what I suggest next:

🔧 Reinstall the Microphone Device Manually:

Open Device Manager.

Expand Audio inputs and outputs.

Right-click the microphone listed (e.g., Realtek Mic) and select Uninstall device.

After uninstalling, click on Action > Scan for hardware changes at the top menu. This should force Windows to reinstall the correct drivers.

💡 If that doesn’t work, check under Sound, video and game controllers for the Realtek driver and repeat the same steps.

Lastly, if it still says “not configured,” we may be looking at a deeper issue—possibly with the system registry or even hardware.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
