HP ENVY x360 15 Convertible PC 15-eu1000 (4V9Q2AV)

I cannot get this microphone to work at all. I feel as though I've tried all the solutions. I did all the audio tests, made sure I was fully updated, reset my laptop, made sure my microphone has permission for all apps, did troubleshooting, even the HP assistant said all was good with my microphone, but somehow the test in settings doesn't pick up any sound at all. This happened suddenly yesterday, it worked find before that.

Hi @gr6cel,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already gone through several key troubleshooting steps for your HP ENVY x360 15 Convertible PC microphone issue. Since the microphone stopped working suddenly and you've already tried basic troubleshooting, there are a few more advanced steps you can try.

Check Device Manager for Driver Issues

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Scroll down to Audio inputs and outputs and look for your microphone.
  • Right-click your microphone and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • If it's up to date, try selecting Uninstall device, then restart your computer to reinstall it automatically.
  • Check for any yellow warning symbols, which could indicate an issue with the hardware.

Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter Again

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound > Scroll down to Troubleshoot.
  • Run the troubleshooter for both Input (microphone) and Output (speakers) to see if Windows detects any issues.

Check Default Microphone Settings

  • Right-click the Sound icon in the taskbar and choose Sounds.
  • Go to the Recording tab, select your microphone, and click Set as Default Device (if it's not already).
  • Click Properties, then go to the Levels tab and make sure the microphone level is set high enough (above 50%).
  • Under the Enhancements tab, make sure that Disable all enhancements is unchecked.

Disable Exclusive Mode

  • In the same Properties window under the Advanced tab, uncheck the box that says Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.

Test the Microphone in Another Application

  • Try using your microphone in a different app like Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams to see if it’s recognized.
  • You can also try using a website like https://mictests.com/ to test your microphone directly through your browser.

Roll Back Recent Windows Updates

  • If the problem started after a recent Windows update, rolling it back might fix it.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > View update history > Uninstall updates, and check if there are any recent updates that may have caused this issue.

BIOS and Firmware Updates

  • It's possible that a BIOS or firmware update may fix microphone-related hardware issues.
  • Visit the HP Support website, search for your laptop model, and check for any available updates for the BIOS or firmware.

Try External Microphone

  • If none of the above steps work, try plugging in an external microphone or using a headset with a microphone. If the external one works, it could indicate a hardware issue with the built-in microphone.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
