Microphone stops working after a short while when trying to use apps featuring voice channels such as Discord, Messenger and Skype. It happens with webcam microphone and external headphone microphones(I tied 2 diffrent headsets to be sure). On Discord I can restart the cycle by reconnecting to a voice channel but it stops working after a while again. On Skype even that sometimes doesn't help. I tried:
- Updating audio devices drivers
- Updating all system drivers
- Using Hardware Diagnostics
- Repairing Windows
My device: Laptop HP Pavilion 16″ 16-ag0000(955U3AV)
OS: Windows 11 23H2

Hi @Myslibor
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with a microphone issue like that, especially since you’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional suggestions you might consider:
Check Privacy Settings:
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Ensure that microphone access is turned on for the apps you’re using (Discord, Skype, etc.).
Adjust Audio Settings:
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
- Under Input, select your microphone and check the Device Properties. Ensure the volume is set appropriately and that any enhancements are disabled.
Disable Exclusive Mode:
- In the same Device Properties window, click on Additional device properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck the options for Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. This can help with issues where one app takes control of the microphone.
Run the Audio Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter to see if it identifies and resolves any issues.
Check for Conflicting Software:
- Some applications may interfere with microphone functionality. Ensure that no other audio software (like sound enhancers) is running that could affect the microphone.
Test in Safe Mode:
- Boot your laptop into Safe Mode and see if the microphone works properly in voice apps. This can help identify if a third-party application or driver is causing the issue.
Reset Windows Audio Service:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart. You can also try restarting the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service.
Try Different USB Ports (for external microphones):
- If you’re using a USB microphone or headset, try connecting it to a different USB port.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Sorry for not closing the thread, I fixed the issue after creating it. Disabling Audio enhancements did the trick.(although I'm pretty sure I tried it before). Also thank you for your help.
