HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1001ne
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi HP team,

Lately, i’m experiencing some issues when I play games, or just simply browsing the internet or doing audio production related stuff with my laptop for 2-3 hours, my screen will turn black for u3-5 minutes then my drive D will be missing. Sometimes there will be an error when I click my Drive D, it states that my Drive D is encountering fatal error. I resolved this issue by unplugging and plugging my laptop charger then i will restart or harf reset my laptop.

I just found this annoying especially if i’m working with a music project or playing online games or doing productivity stuff that was located in my drive D because this issue never happened to me before even in long sessions with my laptop.

Can you suggest what is causing the issue or is there a solution before with the similar issue? Is this a hardware or software related issue?  Is this a power supply issue?

Thank you

Hi @KikoH,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

The issue you are experiencing with your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1001ne, where the screen turns black and Drive D goes missing, suggests potential problems with your storage drive or power management settings. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check for Hardware Issues

Ensure Proper Drive Connection:

  • If Drive D is a secondary internal hard drive or SSD, ensure it is properly connected. This may involve opening the laptop and checking the physical connections. If you're not comfortable doing this, consider taking it to a professional.

Run a Diagnostic Test:

  • HP laptops come with a built-in diagnostics tool. Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens. Press F2 to open System Diagnostics and run the tests for your hard drive.

2. Update Drivers and BIOS

Update Storage Drivers:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Disk drives, right-click your Drive D, and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Update BIOS:

  • Visit the HP Support website.
  • Enter your laptop model and check for BIOS updates.
  • Download and install any available BIOS updates following the instructions provided by HP.

3. Check Power Management Settings

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Press Windows + X and select Power Options.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  • Click on Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Hard disk and then Turn off hard disk after.
  • Set it to Never.

Disable USB Selective Suspend:

  • In the same advanced power settings window, expand USB settings and then USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set it to Disabled.

4. Check for File System Errors

  1. Run CHKDSK:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type chkdsk 😧 /f /r and press Enter. This will check Drive D for errors and attempt to fix them.
    • You may be prompted to schedule the check on the next restart. If so, restart your laptop.

Kindly check the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @KikoH,

Please find the next steps below.

. Check Event Viewer for Errors

  1. Event Viewer:
    • Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer.
    • Expand Windows Logs and click on System.
    • Look for any critical errors or warnings related to Drive D and note the details. This can help identify the root cause.

6. Test in Safe Mode

  1. Boot in Safe Mode:
    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
    • Under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
    • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    • Press F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
    • Use your laptop in Safe Mode for a while to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if a third-party software or driver is causing the problem.

7. Check for Software Conflicts

  1. Clean Boot:
    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    • Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
    • Click Disable all.
    • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
    • Disable all startup items.
    • Restart your laptop and see if the issue persists.

8. Consider Replacing the Drive

If the issue continues after trying the above steps, it is possible that Drive D is failing. Consider replacing the drive and restoring your data from a backup.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be a deeper hardware problem. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance. or consider taking your laptop to an authorized service center for a thorough diagnosis.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
