How can I get the mute setting to turn on and off depending on the audio output I switch to? In essence, how do I change my settings so that the computer remembers which audio output was muted or unmuted, without having to mute/unmute manually?
An example could be changing from muted computer audio to unmuted headphones and having the audio unmute on its own and vice versa.

@Sam1163, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To achieve automatic switching of mute settings based on the audio output device, you can use a combination of Windows settings and third-party software. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Using Windows Settings
Set Default Audio Devices:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Sounds".
- Go to the "Playback" tab, right-click your preferred device, and select "Set as Default Device".
Configure Communication Device:
- In the same "Playback" tab, right-click your communication device (e.g., headphones) and select "Set as Default Communication Device".
Using Third-Party Software
To automate the mute/unmute process based on the audio output device, you can use software like Audio Switcher or SoundSwitch. Here's how:
Download and Install SoundSwitch:
- Visit the SoundSwitch website and download the software.
- Install and run SoundSwitch.
Configure SoundSwitch:
- Open SoundSwitch and go to the "Settings".
- Under the "Playback" tab, add your audio devices (e.g., speakers and headphones).
- Set up hotkeys to switch between devices.
Automate Mute/Unmute:
- SoundSwitch allows you to set specific actions when switching devices. Configure it to mute/unmute based on the selected device.
Example Configuration
- Speakers: Set as the default device and muted.
- Headphones: Set as the default communication device and unmuted.
By following these steps, your laptop will remember the mute/unmute settings for each audio output device, allowing for seamless transitions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
