Hello, can someone please help me - how do I reactivate the built-in microphone in my laptop using the F key combination?

@Mone100, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
ep, I can help you with that.

On most HP Envy 17 laptops, the built-in microphone can be enabled or disabled using the F8 key (sometimes F10 or F12 depending on your model). Here’s how to check and reactivate it:

Reactivate Mic Using F Key

  1. Look for a key on the top row (usually F8, may have a microphone icon with a slash).
  2. Press it once to toggle the microphone on.
  • If nothing happens, try holding the Fn key + F8.
  • Some HP laptops use Fn Lock, so try both with and without Fn.

Re-enable Mic from Windows Settings

If the key doesn't help, the mic may be disabled in settings. Try this:

  1. Right-click the 🔊 sound icon in the system tray.
  2. Click Sound settings.
  3. Scroll down and click More sound settings under Advanced.
  4. In the Recording tab:
  • Look for "Internal Microphone".
  • If it's disabled (greyed out), right-click > Enable.
  • Set it as Default Device if needed.

Check Privacy Settings

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Make sure Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone are both On.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
