My computer is making strange, constant notification sounds. When it began, I got a notification from Windows Explorer saying an unrecognized USB device was connected to my computer and that I should reconnect it, however I never put anything into it, and the issue began while I was already using it normally. I tried turning off the notifications, but even when the notification popup stopped, the sound continued irrregularly. I tried restarting my computer, but that did nothing. I am not sure what else to do.

That’s definitely annoying—especially since the notification sound persists even after disabling pop-ups. Since Windows Explorer is detecting an unrecognized USB device, but you haven’t connected anything, it could be caused by a faulty USB port, a driver issue, or even a ghost device in Windows.

 

Try These Fixes

1. Check for a Faulty USB Port

  • If a USB port is damaged or shorted, Windows may repeatedly detect phantom connections.
  • Try gently wiggling the USB ports to see if the sound stops.
  • If you suspect a faulty port, you can disable it in Device Manager.

2. Disable USB Selective Suspend

  • Open Control PanelPower OptionsChange plan settings.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settingsUSB selective suspend setting.
  • Set it to Disabled and click Apply.

3. Remove Ghost USB Devices

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right-click each USB Root Hub and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart your PC—Windows will reinstall the drivers automatically.

4. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  • Press Windows + R, type control, and hit Enter.
  • Go to TroubleshootingHardware and SoundConfigure a device.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and fix USB issues.

5. Check for Driver Updates

  • Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right-click each USB device and select Update driver.
  • If updating doesn’t work, try Uninstalling the driver and restarting your PC.

 

If the issue persists, it might be a hardware-level problem with the motherboard’s USB controller. Let me know what happens at each step, and we’ll dig deeper!
