Hi @LorrieL13,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the Microphone.

I'll guide you through the process of troubleshooting the issue with your earphones not working on your HP 14-inch Laptop PC 14-ep0000.

However, to help resolve the issue, I would need a few details.

  •  Have you tried using the earphones on another device (like a phone or another computer) to confirm that they are  working properly?
  •  Are your earphones connected through the 3.5mm headphone jack, or are they USB or Bluetooth earphones?
  •  Are you able to hear sound through the laptop's built-in speakers, or is the sound issue affecting all outputs?
  •  Have you recently installed any software updates, new applications, or made any changes to your system settings?
  •  Do you see any error messages or warnings when you plug in the earphones?

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the issue:

Step 1: Check Physical Connection

Inspect the Jack:

  • Ensure the earphones are firmly plugged into the correct audio jack on the laptop.
  • If using a USB connection, make sure it is fully inserted into a working USB port.

Test with Another Pair of Earphones:

  • If available, try using a different set of earphones to rule out an issue with the earphones themselves.

Step 2: Set Earphones as Default Playback Device

Access Sound Settings:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (system tray) and select "Open Sound settings."

Select Output Device:

  • In the "Sound" settings, check that the earphones are selected as the output device. If not, click the dropdown menu under "Choose your output device" and select your earphones.

Set as Default:

  • Right-click on your earphones in the list of playback devices and select "Set as Default Device."

Step 3: Check for Muted or Low Volume

Volume Levels:

  • Ensure that the volume is turned up both in the system settings and on any physical controls on the earphones themselves (if applicable).

Check Mute Status:

  • Verify that the sound is not muted by checking the volume icon in the system tray.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @LorrieL13 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Step 4: Run Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Use Windows Troubleshooter:
    • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Find "Playing Audio" and click "Run" next to it. Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix any detected issues.

Step 5: Update Audio Drivers

Access Device Manager:

  • Press Windows + X and select "Device Manager."

Update Driver:

  • Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.
  • Right-click on your audio device (e.g., Realtek High Definition Audio) and select "Update driver."
  • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software." Follow any prompts to install updated drivers if available.

Restart the Laptop:

  • Restart your laptop after updating the drivers to apply the changes.

Step 6: Check Audio Format Settings

  1. Adjust Audio Format:
    • In the Sound settings, right-click on your earphones under playback devices and select "Properties."
    • Go to the "Advanced" tab and test different audio formats under "Default Format" to see if it resolves the issue.

Step 7: Check Application-Specific Settings

  1. Application Volume Mixer:
    • Check if specific applications (e.g., media players, browsers) have their own volume controls that might be muted or set to low.
    • Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray, select "Open Volume Mixer," and adjust the volume levels for individual applications.

If the problem persists after these steps, it may be related to a deeper hardware issue with the laptop's audio port, and it might require repair or service.

Keep me posted for further assistance
