I  have a 2 month old laptop with windows 10.  Sound does NOT come from the speakers, but is working if I plug the headphones in.

I have checked everything I can find, including where you test the speakers, again nothing comes from the speakers but does from the headphones.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing audio issues.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

What is the operating system you are using?

Meanwhile, I recommend you run the audio troubleshooter and it will automatically find and fix the audio issues.

Here is how it is done.

  - Launch Troubleshooting by typing and clicking “Troubleshooting” in Windows search.

  - Click on "Playing Audio".

  - Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you continue facing the issue, then uninstall the audio driver from the device manager and then download and install the driver from the below link.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp111001-111500/sp111325.exe

Here is how it is done.

  1. Type "Device Manager" into the search field to open the device manager console.
  2. Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
  3. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
  4. When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.

NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

thanks, this fixed it.

I had run the HP Support Assistant a number of times with no joy, but downloading this updated driver, uninstalling the Realtek speaker and restarting the pc seems to have done the trick

......and as an additional update, The sound stopped working at the next startup so I rolled back the driver to the previous version, which now works consistently. I guess that a recent driver update has encountered some problems?

Yes, it looks like the audio driver is getting installing through Windows updates and causing this issue. I recommend you find the audio driver in Windows update and disable it so that you do not encounter this issue again.

So it turns out that the latest microsoft update was not compatible with the HP audio driver and the poor staff at HP have had so many of these calls.  By the time I had given up trying to fix myself and found the number for HP support (my laptop is only 2 months old so still in warrenty) HP had a new driver created to fix the issue which the support guy installed and ..so far.. all is good.

Thanks for the responses

Must be a driver issue for sure. After rolling back to the old driver, the sound came back through the inbuilt speaker, but developed an annoying popping/cracking sound that occurs every 10 mins or so. To get rid of this, we updated the OS after seeing your last message, but once again, the sound has failed completely.

We can get sound out of a bluetooth speaker, but having to find a workaround isn't good for a pc that's only 3 months old.

Perfect, I am really glad to hear that!

If any other questions arise, please feel free to write back to me.
