HP ENVY x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15-ew0000 (549V8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP ENVY 2-in-1 doesn't seem to be picking up any sound. I get the icon at the bottom when the microphone is being used, but it doesn't seem to be able to pick any sound up even when I'm speaking. I've tried running troubleshoots and checking diagnostics but nothing comes back as a problem,

Hi @keynwah,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP ENVY 2-in-1's microphone isn't picking up sound, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the issue. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you:

1. Check Microphone Settings

  • Privacy Settings: Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and ensure that access to the microphone is allowed for apps you are trying to use it with.
  • Default Device: Right-click on the Sound icon on the taskbar, select Sounds, then go to the Recording tab. Make sure your internal microphone is set as the default device. If not, right-click on it and select Set as Default Device.

2. Update or Reinstall Drivers

Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause the microphone to malfunction.

  • Update Drivers: Go to Device Manager, find Audio inputs and outputs, right-click on your microphone, and select Update driver. You can search automatically for updated driver software.
  • Reinstall Drivers: In Device Manager, right-click on your microphone under Audio inputs and outputs and select Uninstall device. Then, restart your computer. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver during startup.

3. Check Application Settings

Some applications have their own audio input settings. Verify that the correct microphone is selected within the application settings you are trying to use (e.g., Zoom, Skype).

4. Disable Audio Enhancements

Audio enhancements can sometimes interfere with microphone functionality.

  • Go to Sound settings by right-clicking the sound icon on the taskbar and selecting Sounds.
  • On the Playback tab, double-click your default device (speakers), go to the Enhancements tab, and check Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.

5. Run the Windows Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can sometimes detect and fix issues.

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Select Additional troubleshooters, and run the Speech troubleshooter and the Recording Audio troubleshooter.

6. Check for Physical Issues

  • Make sure there's no physical blockage or dirt covering the microphone holes.
  • If you use an external microphone, check if it's properly connected or try a different port.

7. Check the BIOS/UEFI Settings

In rare cases, the microphone might be disabled in the BIOS/UEFI settings.

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F10, F2, F12, DEL, or ESC, depending on the model).
  • Look for audio settings and ensure the microphone is enabled.

8. System Restore or Reset

If none of the above solutions work, consider using System Restore to revert your computer to a previous state when the microphone was working correctly. If that fails, a System Reset might be necessary, but ensure you back up all important data first.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
