My internal speakers have 'disappeared'. I have Avast Security and was offered a free trial of a Driver Updater, ran the scan and it said that there was an issue with the Realtek Audio, so I skipped that and updated the other outdated drivers, but when I went to look to see what the issue was, Realtek Audio wasn't there. I was given the option to revert to an earlier version, which I chose, but that hasn’t worked either.

Hi @MontyShaft,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop's internal speakers have disappeared, and you no longer see the Realtek Audio device, here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the "Start" button and select "Device Manager."
  • Look under "Sound, video and game controllers" for any mention of Realtek Audio or other audio devices.
  • If you see Realtek Audio with a yellow exclamation mark, right-click on it and choose "Update driver."

Scan for Hardware Changes:

  • Within Device Manager, right-click on your computer name at the top of the list and select "Scan for hardware changes."
  • This might reinstall or re-detect the audio device if it's not showing.

Install Realtek Audio Driver:

  • Visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number.
  • Go to the "Drivers & Software" section and download the latest Realtek High Definition Audio driver.
  • Install the driver and restart your laptop.

Check Audio Troubleshooter:

  • Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot."
  • Select "Playing Audio" and run the troubleshooter to identify and fix possible issues.

Disable Avast Driver Updater:

  • If Avast's Driver Updater was causing issues, it may help to disable or uninstall this tool temporarily.
  • Consider reverting any changes it suggested, if not already done.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F10, F2, or Delete during startup, depending on the model).
  • Ensure that the onboard audio is enabled in the BIOS settings.

System Restore:

  • If you recently created a restore point, consider performing a system restore to a time before the issue started.
  • Go to "Control Panel" > "Recovery" > "Open System Restore" to start the process.

Try these steps to restore the functionality of the internal speakers on your HP laptop

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Raj, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the issue remains unresolved. I had already tried most of your suggestions, but tried them all again. Results were as follows:

Check Device Manager:

“The best drivers for your device are already installed.”

Scan for Hardware Changes:

Nothing appeared to happen.

Install Realtek Audio Driver:

My laptop is HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-es0xxx. When I enter this it pulls up a list with 6 entries all of which have a 6-character code at the end. I cannot see any of these or anything like them on my laptop. I chose 1 at random, entered the OS – Windows 11 – then pulled up the list of versions, and my version – 25H2 – wasn’t there, so I assume that means “HP does not offer any software or drivers for your product for that operating system” ?

Check Audio Troubleshooter:

The Troubleshooter doesn’t mention Realtek, under Speakers it mentions Targus Audio

Disable Avast Driver Updater:

This was a free trial, which I will not be proceeding with when the trial comes to an end, but am reluctant to remove at this stage in case I need to involve them in resolving the problem. I did ‘revert’, but that did not resolve the issue.

 BIOS/UEFI Settings:

Restarted my laptop and tried pressing F10, F2 and Delete, but nothing happened – presumably different on my model?

System Restore:

I had previously tried this and there was a Restore Point of the day I did the Update, but when I tried to 'restore' it was unsuccessful as there was not enough space, so I cleared space, but then the only available restore point was the date of the failed 'restore', and it still is.

I'm hoping that something in the above might lead you to some further suggestions.

Thanks.
