Hi @Flippercast,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP laptop is only 4 weeks old and you’re experiencing no sound output and microphone issues on it (and possibly on another HP device as well). Let’s go through some steps to isolate the problem and get your audio working again.
1. Check Volume and Output Device
Click the Speaker icon in the taskbar.
Make sure the volume is turned up and not muted.
Click the small arrow / “Select a sound output device” and ensure the correct device is selected (for example, “Speakers (Realtek Audio)” or your headset).
If you’re using external speakers or a headset, unplug/replug them and test again.
2. Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Go to Start → Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
Under Playing Audio and Recording Audio, click Run.
Follow the on-screen steps to apply any fixes suggested.
3. Check Microphone Privacy and Permissions
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Make sure Microphone access is turned On for the whole system.
Also ensure the apps you use (like Zoom, Teams, or Voice Recorder) have permission to access the microphone.
4. Test in Voice Recorder
Type Voice Recorder in the Start menu and open it.
Record a short clip using the built-in mic.
Play it back to check if any audio is captured.
(This helps identify if the mic itself is working at the OS level.)
5. Check Device Manager for Audio Drivers
Right-click Start → Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
Look for entries like Realtek Audio, Intel Smart Sound, or similar.
If you see a yellow triangle or “Unknown device,” right-click and select Update driver → Search automatically.
If the driver looks correct, right-click the audio device and choose Uninstall device, then restart the PC to let Windows reinstall it.
6. Update BIOS and Drivers
Visit the HP Support website, enter your laptop’s model number, and download the latest:
BIOS update
Chipset drivers
Audio drivers
Install each, restarting after every update.
I hope this helps.
