@IvyT13, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop stops playing sound through its speakers. Since you mentioned that sound works only via Bluetooth EarPods and not through the built-in speakers, let’s walk through some steps to help resolve this issue.

Check Default Playback Device

Sometimes, Windows sets the wrong default audio device.

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → SoundsPlayback tab.
  • If you see your laptop speakers listed (e.g., “Speakers – Realtek Audio”), right-click and Set as Default Device.
  • Click OK and test the sound.

Run HP Audio Check

HP provides a built-in diagnostic tool:

  • Open HP Support Assistant (search in Start menu).
  • Go to Troubleshooting and FixesAudio Check.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you don’t have HP Support Assistant installed, you can download it here: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  • Press Windows + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Conexant) → Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

Alternatively, you can manually download the latest audio driver from HP: Official HP® Support

Enter your laptop model to find the correct audio driver.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to SettingsWindows UpdateCheck for updates.
  • Install any pending updates and restart.

BIOS Update (if applicable)

Sometimes, a BIOS update can fix hardware detection issues.

  • Visit the HP Drivers page above.
  • Look for any BIOS updates listed for your model.

Additional Tip

If your laptop has Bang & Olufsen or DTS Audio Control software, check its settings to ensure speakers aren’t muted or misconfigured.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
