Hello, I’m having a problem with my laptop.
I did a system reset on windows 11, and i noticed my sound is “muted” and no reaction. Later after trying to troubleshoot with windows and hp support with no success, I tried several solutions on the web.
the speakers do not appear in “device manager” or in the “playback” tab at the sounds settings.
I have no new updates on windows, and hp provides only drivers for windows 10 for my computer.
I tried “add legacy hardware” for USB audio OEM device, but it fails to install.
On device manager under “sound, video and game controllers” I have “AMD Audio device” and “Nvidia high definition audio” only, and both drivers updated.
under “system devices” i have twice “high definition audio controller” updated.
Also checked that BIOS is updated.
is there any other possible solution?

Hi @igking21,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd like to help!
I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps.
Since you have already tried the required troubleshooting,
Check Windows Update:
- Sometimes, Windows Update can resolve driver-related issues. Make sure your system is up-to-date by checking for and installing any pending updates.
Run Windows Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot. Select "Playing Audio" and run the troubleshooter. Follow any suggested steps to fix the problem.
Check Audio Services:
- Press Win + R, type "services.msc," and press Enter. Look for services like Windows Audio, and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and ensure they're running. If not, right-click and select "Start."
Check Physical Connections:
- Ensure that your headphones or speakers are properly connected to the laptop's audio jack or USB port if using an external device.
Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Enter your laptop's BIOS/UEFI settings during startup (usually by pressing a specific key like F2, F10, or DEL). Ensure that the audio settings are enabled.
System Restore or Rollback:
- If the issue started after a specific update or change, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state.
If none of the above steps work, consider reaching out to HP phone support for further assistance.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello, thank you for replying.
since its been a couple of days I tried several solutions.
My BIOS doesn’t have an option to enable audio so I assume its the locked version.
I went and did a clean installation of windows 11 through an external USB, but the issue is still there.
what I noticed is that when I install the Realtek driver it does not appear on the device manager, so i tried adding it manually with hardware legacy but in the middle on installation it crashes into a blue screen, problem with RTKVHD64.sys . (I tried the oldest and the newest drivers).
I’m starting to think it might be a faulty chip, hope I’m wrong and there might be another solution I didn’t try
