After the windows update on 12/10/2024, all of my audio stopped working. The speakers and microphone on the laptop itself do not work nor do the external devices (I have a focusrite scarlet 2i2 microphone.) I've uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers, including for the focusrite. Any ideas for what more I can do? thank you.

Hi @ZKA321,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the Windows update may have caused issues with your audio configuration. Here are steps to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.
Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, click Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
- Do the same for Input (microphone) if it’s listed.
Set Default Audio Device
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds (or Sound Settings).
- Go to the Playback tab, and make sure your internal speakers or external device (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) are set as the Default Device.
- Similarly, for the Recording tab, set the default microphone.
Roll Back Windows Update
- If the issue started immediately after the update, consider rolling it back:
- Settings > Windows Update > Update History.
- Select Uninstall updates, locate the recent update, and remove it.
Update/Reinstall Audio Drivers
a. For Bang & Olufsen speakers:
- Go to Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Right-click on the audio device (e.g., Realtek or Bang & Olufsen) and select Uninstall device.
- Reboot your PC; Windows will reinstall the driver.
b. For Focusrite Scarlett 2i2:
- Download the latest driver from Focusrite's website.
Disable Audio Enhancements
- Go to Control Panel > Sound.
- Select your speaker or microphone device and click Properties.
- Navigate to the Enhancements tab and check Disable all enhancements.
Check Windows Audio Services
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Look for Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services.
- Ensure they are Running and set to Automatic. If not, restart them.

Check Focusrite Software Configuration
- Ensure the Scarlett 2i2 is correctly recognized in Focusrite Control software.
- Verify input/output settings match your preferences.
Reset BIOS/UEFI Audio Settings
- During startup, enter BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, or Del).
- Ensure the onboard audio is Enabled.
Install a Previous Audio Driver
- Check your laptop’s support page on HP’s website for an earlier version of the audio driver and install it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden, I greatly appreciate your response. Good to feel supported. I’ll keep your guidance handy. Also, for anyone else with my same issue, what happened this time and last time my PC was issued a .net update from microsoft (and the audio stopped working) was that my external video camera (logi brand) stopped the audio from working - despite uninstalling and reinstalling HP drivers and also microphone drivers (I use a Scarlett 2i2.) I disconnected the attached camera & purchased a “mic free” camera to try (airhug.). We’ll see if this same issue happens again with the next update. Hopefully not. In any case, thanks again for the reply and tips. Nice to know we are not along out here as we manage our tech.
