I have no sound. I reset defaults, and followed the very long list of suggestions from the "trouble shooter", all to no avail.

Meanwhile, I recommend you to uninstall the audio driver from device manager and reinstall it from the below link.
Here is how it is done.
Uninstall:
- Start Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Device Manager.
- Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
- On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
- When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.

I had this same problem (same laptop).
I found a temporary solution a few weeks ago:
1. Click the start button
2. Search "Device Manager" and click enter
3. Scroll down and click the arrow next to "Sound, video, and game controllers"
4. Right-click "Conexant ISST Audio" and click "Disable device"
5. Re-enable it
This worked for me but the problem will persist. Give it a shot and see if it fixes the problem for you.

So I contacted HP support and started a chat seeking help to my "no sound" problem. The online agent ended up remotely controlling my computer and reinstalled the drivers and updated the bios. Here is the explanation I was given:
"Microsoft has pushed some updates regarding the operating systym to increase the performance level and security system of the laptop, shich consists the driver of teh Sound as well. So we need to update the driver of HP so that it will communicate with the audio or speaker of the laptop perfectly, that's the reason the sonds were not working. NOw we have updated eteh driver, and ou son't face any issues with the laptop".
Well, the sound worked for two days. After my computer has been on for more than 10 minutes, the sound stops working. IF I restart the computer the sound temporariy comes back. So frustrating!!
@ vesuvi: I tried your temporarily solution and it does work for me. But I am unsure if it is the "disabling" and "enabling" or just the restart that gets the sound working again.
Guess I'll be contacting HP again:(

I have the same problem on my HP Envy x360 Convertible 15 with the Realtek HD Audio Drivers. Out of the box, on-board speakers never worked. Headphones and Bluetooth work. I needed to send the machine back but never did because I was too busy using it. I don't have a solution yet, other than to use headphones and bluetooth.

I have an Envy that had the same issue. My fix came within minutes as this is a Windows 10 operating system issue. What I did was follow these instructions: "Oct 2, 2019 - To run the troubleshooter In the search box on the [WINDOWS 10] taskbar, type audio troubleshooter, select Fix and find problems with playing sound from the results, then select Next."
THIS IS ALL I HAD TO DO. MICROSOFT TROUBLESHOOTER WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY FIND THE ISSUE AND FIX IT AND WITHIN SECONDS SOUND FROM THE BANK & OLUFSEN LAPTOP BEGAN PLAYING IMMEDIATELY AS I HAD A YOUTUBE VIDEO WITH PIANO MUSIC PLAYING THAT I COULD NOT HEAR. GOOD TO HAVE SOMETHING WITH SOUND TRYING TO PLAY IN THE BACKGROUND SO THAT THE MOMENT YOUR SPEAKERS COME "TO LIFE" YOU WILL KNOW!
