I ran in to the same problem.
Suddenly the audio devices went dead & followed the below steps and it worked for me. Scared the hell out of me for sometime.
1. Downloaded the Audio driver for IDT (Check DavidPK's)
2. Uninstall the current IDT Driver
3. Shut down the system
4. Unplug AC inputs
5. Restart the laptop and let it automatically finish installing the driver.
6. Once done, right clicked on the Speaker icon in system tray -> Play back -> Speakers and Head phnes & clicked SET DEFAULT.
7. Tested it and It started working.
Thanks DavidPK for your inputs. Registered just to thank you! 🙂
Is this something to do with the Hp system update???

Hi,
You're welcome and I'm glad it helped
At the time I originally wrote the post, there was a bios update on a range of notebooks that caused the sound to go missing - if this is what happened with your notebook, I doubt the problem will re-occur
Updates through HP Support Assistant are generally pretty good, but if the issue does occur again, it may be best to simply hide the IDT update HPSA recommends to prevent it being applied again.
Best regards,
DP-K

Hi,
From your description, it sounds like you have a sealed battery in which case you shouldn't remove it, just use the method in the table below for your particular Model.

Hi DavidPK, I went through all the steps you detailed and now not only does my sound still not work, but the little progress bar on itunes doesn't move (before everything looked ok, the computer thought it was making sound, but nothing was coming out of the speakers. ) Sound doesn't work on any application on my computer. thoughts??
