@Villajohn, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Let's work together to get your sound issue resolved. Since you've already tried restarting and reinstalling drivers, here are some additional steps to help troubleshoot and fix the problem:

Check Audio Output Device

  • Click the Speaker icon in the taskbar.
  • Make sure the correct output device (e.g., "Speakers – Realtek Audio") is selected.
  • If you see multiple devices, try switching between them.

Run HP Support Assistant Audio Check

HP Support Assistant can automatically detect and fix common audio issues.

Use Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  • Scroll down and click Troubleshoot under “Output”.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Intel, etc.) > Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop to reinstall the driver automatically.

Update Audio Drivers

  • Visit the HP support site: Official HP® Support
  • Enter your laptop model and download the latest audio driver.
  • Install and restart your laptop.

Check for Muted or Disabled Audio

  • Open Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab.
  • Right-click your speaker device > Enable (if disabled).
  • Click Properties > Levels tab and ensure volume is not muted.

BIOS Audio Settings (Advanced)

Sometimes audio can be disabled in BIOS.

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Audio settings and ensure it's Enabled

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Thanks for the detailed description, unfortunately tried all these measures. I have sound when external, ie plugged into speakers, but nothing from the laptop.

@Villajohn, Thanks for confirming that external audio works, that’s a key clue. Since the sound only plays through external devices and not from the laptop’s internal speakers, this suggests either:

  • A configuration issue where Windows is prioritizing another audio output, or
  • A problem with the laptop’s internal speakers or their connection.

Let’s narrow it down:

Check Default Playback Device Again

  1. Right-click the Speaker icon in the taskbar → Sounds.
  2. Go to the Playback tab.
  3. Select Speakers – Realtek (or your laptop’s internal audio) and click Set Default.
  4. Click OK and test sound.

Test with HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press the Power button, then repeatedly press F2 (or Esc, then F2) to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests → Audio.
  • If the test fails or you hear nothing, note the failure ID, it indicates a hardware issue.

Check Balance & Levels

  • Go to Control Panel → Sound → Playback → Speakers → Properties → Levels.
  • Make sure balance isn’t shifted fully left or right and volume is up.

Reinstall Audio Drivers with Clean Install

  • Open Device Manager → expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device → check Delete the driver software for this device.
  • Restart your laptop.
  • Download and install the latest audio driver for your exact model from the HP Support website.

If Windows detects no issues but the internal speakers remain silent, it’s likely a hardware problem, either the speakers are disconnected inside the laptop or the speaker module has failed. In this case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United Kingdom | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps!

If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Yes” button to say thanks!

Take care and have a great day.
