Example: Pavilion dv9000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently had need to connect my dv9000 to my panasonic TV - this I did via an HDMI cable. The visuals were perfect, but there was no sound whatsoever.

As far as I can tell (I'm just a novice) I do not have any sign of a HDMI device or driver evident - although of course the dv9000 does have a HDMI port as standard.

How can I progress this to a successful conclusion. No mention of HDMI in device manager - but sound anf graphics driver all up to date

Windows 10 64 bit -

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi:

Go to the device manager.

Click to expand the sound, video and game controllers device manager category.

You should be seeing two audio devices there...one for the PC speakers, and one for the HDMI port.

Let me know what you see there, and also let me know what model graphics adapter your notebook has.

Hello Paul

thank you so much for coming back.

Firstly I can confirm that my graphics are nVidia (GeForce 8400M GS)

The only two entries in sound show SPEAKERS

Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2  (set on default)

The second entry - is SPDIF interface

Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2  (shown as ready)

Hope this provides the information that you need

Many Thanks

Colin

You're very welcome, Colin.

I was hoping you would have seen a NVidia HD audio device because that is what you need to be seeing.

What driver did you install for W10?

You should use the Vista Nvidia driver that originally came with your notebook.  It works by manually installing the driver.

What is the product number of your notebook?

Use this guide to find that information.

I can give you the instructions to manually install the Vista graphics driver on W10, and see if that gets the HDMI sound to work.

Hello again

regrettably do not have the original installation disk - have checked and see that the sound driver is...

Conexant

18-6-2008

Driver Version 4.36.7.61

You wrote "I can give you the instructions to manually install the Vista graphics driver on W10, and see if that gets the HDMI sound to work." - this might be worth a try, so would welcome your instructions

Thanks again

OK>

Give this a try...

First create a restore point, so you can go back to the current status in case this doesn't work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027538/windows-create-a-system-restore-point

Download and save, but do not run this driver.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42501-43000/sp42635.exe

Download and install this free file utility.  The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

https://www.7-zip.org/

Go to the windows control panel>Programs>Uninstall a Program.

Let the list populate and uninstall any Nvidia software listed there.

Then go to the Device manager, click to expand the display adapters device manager category.

Click on the Nvidia graphics adapter listed there, select Uninstall and check the uninstall driver box.

Then restart the PC.

I expect that no graphics driver will be installed and what will be listed under the display adapters device manager category will be a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

Now, right click on the Vista nvidia graphics driver file you saved.  Select 7-Zip from the list of items on the menu.

Have 7-Zip Extract to:  and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp42635).

Once that is done, go to the device manager, click to expand the display adapters device manager category.

Click on the Microsoft Basic display adapter.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of Device drivers on my computer.

Click on Have Disk and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created>WinVista64>nvqh (setup information file), click Next, and the graphics driver should install.

Hopefully, it will also install the HDMI audio driver that is missing.

Then restart the PC and give it a go.

Paul, thank you - you have obviously taken much time to outline a suggested answer to my problem - it was clear to follow and was easy to implement.

Regrettably it did not make any difference - I still have visual output from the HDMI port, but no audio. I will try to make time to view once again your previous suggestions list.

Thanks again

Colin

You're very welcome, Colin.

Sorry that installing the Vista driver for your notebook did not resolve the problem.
