Hi

My HP Pavilion dv7 has had no speaker sound for the last 4 days. The headphone jack works fine, but there is no sound from the laptop's speakers.

I have done a Hard Reset - this has not fixed the problem. I have also tried to use the IDT Audio Installer as per the instructions in this post: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio-e-g-Windows-8/No-internal-speaker-sound-on-...

This has not fixed the problem, however I also have difficulty following the instructions properly as I have Windows 7 Home Premium - the ability to disable the automatic driver installer on re-starting the computer after you have removed the IDT Audio driver appears to be impossible (I haven't found an internet forum post that has successfully disabled the automatic driver installation for the Home Premium edition).

My Pavilion dv7 product number is: QC370PA#ABG

How do I get the speakers to work again?

Thanks

It is now working. After several restarts and nothing happening over the last couple of days, I started the notebook from the battery this morning and there was sound. Not sure if starting from battery rather than power made a difference - this is the only different thing I have done since your last recommendation.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Try the following - this should give a better idea whether the issue is software or hardware related.

Even though you've already triad a 'Hard Reset', shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.

Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.

Let the OS fully load then open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Properties.  Click the Driver tab and then click 'Update driver'.  Select 'Browse my computer for driver software' and then select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.  Left click 'High Definition Audio Device' once to highlight it and then click the Next button to install it.

Has this made any difference?

No, that didn't work.

Hi,

Boot into the bios menu again and tap some of the character keys such as A, S, D T - do any of these produce a 'beep' tone?

Yes - that made a sound

I have just discovered that now, when I plug my headphones in, the speaker works. It doesn't appear to be using Beats Audio (the volume icon is different to the one that normally appears and doesn't have a Beats Audio logo like normal). There is no sound through the headphones though. The speakers don't work if the headphones are not plugged in.

This didn't happen before I tried your above solutions, so something has changed.

Hi,

Try the following.

Download the following IDT HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55094.exe

When done, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link.

Chipset Driver - Windows 7.

When this has completed, shut down the notebook.

Start the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio through the internal speakers.

No, that hasn't worked.

Sound through speakers is still only available when the headphones are plugged in (no siund through headphones though). However the Beats Audio sound icon now appears when the volume is changed (unlike before).

Can anyone help?

I also have an HP Pavilion DV70 running on Windows Home Premium (less than 2 years old). In the last few days I've also been hit with the speaker/headphone problem: no sound from laptop's built-in speakers until I plug earphones into any of the front left sockets.

I've tried all the obvious settings / hard reset etc.. As reported by others, I get an occasional 'cicking' from the speaker when headphones not plugged in - and yesterday afternoon I got sound back briefly a couple of times - but it was intermittent, crackly and didn't last long.

I'm guessing this must be some sort of software conflict as a result of an HP or Windows update but I have no idea how to proceed. Can anyone help?
