Nvidia High Definition Audio

"The audio peripheral doesn't appear to be plugged in" message

No audio output from device. Drivers up to date. "This device is working properly." reported from Windows. But also states that device is not plugged in. Is this a physical connection issue or a software issue? Cannot resolve with my limited knowledge. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
