OMEN 15-AX000NL
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone, I've been looking around for a solution to my problem, but I haven't found nothing since other questions on this forum are regarding other laptop models or similar problems but not my exact issue.

On my OMEN 15 AX000NL laptop everytime I need to use the integrated microphone(s) i find that the audio level is too low (for instance in skype or facebook messenger, people can't hear me properly, and even audacity can't record at a proper level). In windows Recording Devices options, I've set the pre-amp level and the volume to maximum values, but this doesn't seem to affect anything. Also, when I try to speak and have a look to the level meter, it always stays low, barely moving: only when I touch the microphone itself on the plastics the meter moves to maximum value.
Another thing I want to point out is that on Ubuntu Linux this doesn't happen: the microphone(s) work(s) flawlessly and other people can properly hear me on videochats.
So I know for a fact that the microphone(s) work(s), but Windows or some driver is keeping their volume too low.
Could anyone please suggest something to do?
Thanks for your attention

Hi @Vincintosh,

Good Day. Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with the internal Microphone which works flawlessly in Linux. Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did this happen after a recent software or Windows update?
  • Has it worked correctly in Windows before?

For now please try these steps:

  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers. Then check the box delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the bios, chipset and audio drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2vwICXq and check if the issue gets resolved.
  • Also try the relevant troubleshooting steps from this link: http://hp.care/2iw7KMG  to resolve Microphone related issues
  • If it does not, then please perform a system recovery to factory settings from this guided troubleshooter link:  http://hp.care/2vwwcyA after backing up all your files. This is to isolate driver compatibility issues with Windows.
  • This should do the trick for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂

Hello and thank you for your attention.
I'm not home at the moment and I don't have the computer with me, so I'm going to try and perform all of the suggested tasks as soon as I get home. I'm now going to answer to your questions though, should this help you figure out some more solutions for me to try.

It has not worked correctly in Windows since the first day I bought the computer. I just didn't care much because I used external microphones to record good audio when needed. Recently though I've started to do a lot of Skype and Messenger and I need the integrated microphones to work fine, so I actually need to solve the issue now.
This of course excludes that it has happened after an update.

I've followed the advised steps, but being honest, the only one that seemed somewhat useful was updating the driver (that I didn't do before, because I wasn't sure where to download it from). The BIOS is up to date, since I did it a couple of weeks ago because I was having a noisy fan issue and I can't see how restoring the factory settings would help since, as I said, the problem has been there from the first day I got my hands on this computer (also I don't have much time I can spend restoring the computer and reinstalling all the apps and setting up everything again). Finally, the troubleshooting steps from that link seem to be just written for complete dumbs: they're not useful at all since they refer to the integrated windows troubleshooting system that has never worked ever.

After the driver update, by the way, nothing seems to be changed: the issue is still there with exactly the same behaviour I decribed before.

Hi @Vincintosh,

I reviewed the post. Thanks for the reply. If' you've done everything and the issue persists, then please contact HP phone support for further assistance. One interaction with them might be required to isolate the issue further to being hardware or software related as there is more to it than meets the eye here.

If the computer's Microphone still has a problem, then the computer needs to be repaired or serviced by contacting HP phone support.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

Another workaround would be to order a USB Microphone from Amazon or E bay and use it with the computer if the internal Microphone is faulty.
