HP Pavilion - 15-cw1017na
Microsoft Windows 11

For a few weeks, I've had sound issues, when I mute the sound, I must restart the laptop for the sound to come back. Now, I have no sound at all? All audio diagnostics come back OK with no issues. My microphone/Bluetooth heasets are not affected.

My B&O speakers were replaced under warranty some time ago, I suspect they are now broken, again? Are they prone to failure?

Driver details: 07/12/21 - 6.0.9279.1

Any ideas how to diagnose the issue?

@VFRRaider, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an audio issue on your HP Pavilion laptop with B&O speakers. Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown to help diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:

Concerns About B&O Speakers

  • Reliability: B&O speakers are generally reliable, but they can fail due to overheating, physical stress, or liquid exposure. However, they are not inherently "prone" to failure unless there are underlying issues, such as motherboard audio chip problems or previous improper repairs.

Diagnosing the Issue

1. Update/Reinstall the Audio Driver Your current driver is dated 07/12/2021, which may be outdated for Windows 11.

  • Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Find Realtek Audio (or similar), right-click, and select Uninstall device.
  • Check "Delete the driver software for this device" if the option appears.
  • Restart your laptop; Windows should automatically reinstall a basic driver.
  • If not, download the latest driver from the HP Support site for your model.

2. Check Windows Audio Services Sometimes, audio services can glitch, causing issues like yours.

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Scroll down to Windows Audio, right-click, and choose Restart.
  • Ensure Windows Audio Endpoint Builder is also running.

3. Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics Built-in Windows diagnostics may miss hardware issues.

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Immediately tap ESC repeatedly, then press F2 to enter HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Go to Component Tests > Audio and run the audio hardware check.

If it fails → it indicates a hardware problem (speakers or audio chip).
If it passes → it suggests a software/driver issue.

4. External Speaker/Headphones Test

  • Plug wired earphones/headphones into the 3.5mm jack.
  • If sound plays fine through them, it points toward internal speakers failing, not the entire audio system.

5. BIOS Update (Optional but Recommended) BIOS updates can sometimes fix audio device handling issues.

  • Check if your BIOS version is the latest for your model on HP’s support site.
  • Caution: Only update BIOS if you're comfortable and connected to stable power.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
