Hi Tom,

Can you get to device manager?  If you type 'Device Manager' in the search box on the initial screen, it should bring it up. Click on it and it will display a list of things underneath. Scroll down until you find 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers'.   Double click that and it will display a sub menu; I have two options, one for audio and one for video. It's the audio you want. Mine says

'Conexant ISST Audio' , yours might say something different if you don't have the Bang & Olufsen audio, I don't know. Double click and it will bring up 'Audio Properties' with tabs General/Drivers/Details/Events.   Select the 'Drivers' tab.  From there, click on 'Uninstall Device' . There is a warning, click ok to proceed. Once it has finished (might take a couple of minutes), retstart your laptop. In the restart, it will check for drivers and install the correct one for your game controller audio.

I hope this works for you, let me know.  I tried everything, using an external mic, reinstalling the input audio drivers, trying different applications and eventually found a youtube video that mention the game controller drivers.

This was only partially successful. It works ok but, for reasons I haven't established yet, it reverted back to the old, bad drivers, I guess when I shut down the machine (I will test that). I reinstalled the drivers again and I did a Zoom call, which was ok.  So, it's working now, but something makes it revert. It's a pain to reinstall drivers every time you want to do a conference call.  Maybe I need to reopen this to get Krazy Toad back on the case.  I don't know how I do that.

I do not have any game controller but I did have a nvidea audio. tried to turn off drivers for that but all that did was to remove the nvidia audio device. Still have terrible noise with microphone.

@Tom-42viking

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  • Step 1: Check the microphone hardware (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)
  • Step 2: Update the audio driver
  • Step 3: Use the Troubleshooting tool
  • Step 4: Configure the sound settings in Windows
  • Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03421813 to complete the troubleshooting step.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
