FYI to the community. I ended up going to HP support. The first person was really helpful, took over my computer and did a bunch of things. Could not fix it so redid the bios and then reset from scratch. none of that worked so I had to follow back up. The second support person tried to scam me out of an extended warranty. They said I needed to send it to them my computer and it would cost me $15 to ship and take a few weeks. I complained so they offered to rush it and told me my warranty was almost up and should pay to make sure it was in the window of time. they said their "manager" said it would be okay to give me a "deal" on the warranty . they wouldn't tell me how soon my warranty was up when asked. I asked her to give me a day and she said that deal would go away if I didn't do it right then. She sent me a link to a payment page.
Well, according to Costco support, it isn't up for 5 more months and then I get an extended warranty automatically with Costco. I guess HP support makes money on pushing warranties.
I will now have to send HP my computer and pay for shipment, which doesn't seem fair since the system is not working under warranty.

This seems like we have the same problem, but I got no grief from HP about getting free shipping back to the company at all. they sent me a return box and label free of charge, although they did say that I could expedite shipping for an additional $15. My issue now is I'm not sure if it is a very good idea to ship off a computer that works fine except for the microphone during a pandemic. They said the label would be good for 30 days from when the case was opened, so I am still trying to decide what to do.
