HP Laptop Pavilion x360 touchscreen model 1179tu
Internal microphone Realtek microphone array shows working properly in device manager , but fails in HP PC hardware diagnostics component test
Realtek speaker test passes ; microphone drivers are updated
Windows 11 OS
I need to know if this is necessarily a hardware problem and if so , the approximate cost of repair / replacement . This problem happened suddenly - I have formatted my PC and reloaded Windows 11 , so I cannot do a system restore to the time when it was working earlier . If this is a software issue , what else can I do - pls advise ?

Hi @tvanant
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Since your Realtek microphone array appears fine in Device Manager but fails in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, it could indicate a hardware issue. However, before assuming it's a hardware failure, here are some steps to confirm:
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Privacy Settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
- Ensure Microphone access is enabled for apps like Google Meet.
Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Recording Audio and run the troubleshooter.
Test with Another App
- Try using Voice Recorder or Microsoft Teams to check if the microphone works.
- If it fails across multiple apps, it’s more likely a hardware issue.
Reinstall Realtek Audio Drivers
- Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Right-click Realtek Audio, select Uninstall device, then restart your laptop.
- Download and install the latest driver from HP’s support page.
Let me know if any of these steps help! If the issue persists, hardware service might be the best option.

Thanks , Hawk's eye , for your detailed response
I tried pretty much everything of all that before even posting my question here , I am surprised , though , how an internal microphone can fail all of a sudden ( while we all know electronic components can fail any time )
Would you by any chance know the cost of Realtek microphone array hardware and also if this alone can be replaced or the part is integrated along with the webcam , in which case the cost of replacement can go quite high ?
As a last try before approaching HP for hardware support , I am going to try downloading the original Windows 10 OS through cloud recovery withe all original drivers that came with my PC - maybe an upgrade to Windows 11 somewhere down the line caused the problem - I have no idea - what does your experience say ?
If I decide not to opt for high cost hardware replacement support , I will probably settle down with an external microphone , though I do not like too many external attachments to my PC in general !!

You're absolutely right—it's frustrating when hardware fails suddenly, especially something as essential as an internal microphone. Based on what I found, the Realtek microphone array is often integrated with the webcam module, meaning replacement costs can be higher if the entire module needs to be swapped. Some laptops allow for separate microphone replacements, but in many cases, it's bundled with the webcam, making repairs more expensive.
