- Right internal speaker makes popping noises

just yesterday the right internal speaker started making popping noises whenever the computer is on, even if it's not in windows or nothing is playing through the speaker -- ie during POST/bios, during shut down, etc.
I took off the bottom cover and the pop is because it seems that the speaker is pulsing. You can see the speaker move.
my guess is something -- maybe a resistor -- got fried.
I ordered a new set of internal speaker online.
However with the dead speaker still attached to the computer the computer can't find any audio devices. It gives me an intel speaker driver error. since it's my kid's computer and they just use headphones all the time I can't tell if this pre-dated the speaker getting fried (ie is this a driver problem) or if it's b/c of the speaker being dead.
Has anyone else encountered this? I guess I'll know more when I replace the speaker...
