So my hp laptop just started to continually mute and unmute. At first, it started out just muting a few things every once and a while. I went to Sound Mixer Options and it would mute and unmute by itself. That was about a week ago. Then now the whole laptop started muting and unmuting. It's only the mute button repeating, and I have tried to use a different keyboard. It mutes with AND without headphones/earbuds. The little light that tells you if its muted or not flashes on and off as it mutes and unmutes. At first, it was so little I could just overlook it. Now it happens to everything. Please help!

Hi @mel3211 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you are experiencing a hardware or software issue with the audio system in your HP laptop. Here are a few troubleshooting steps that you could try to resolve the issue:

1. Update Audio Drivers:

  • Go to the HP website and find the support page for your specific laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest audio driver for your system.

2. Check for Operating System Updates:

  • Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on Check for updates.

3. Disable Audio Enhancements:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  • Select Sounds, and then go to the Playback tab.
  • Choose your default device, and click Properties.
  • Go to the Enhancements tab and check the Disable all enhancements box.

4. Check Keyboard Shortcuts and Accessibility Settings:

  • Make sure that sticky keys or other accessibility settings aren't causing the issue by mistake.
  • Check if any keyboard shortcuts might be triggering the mute/unmute action.

5. Inspect for Malware:

  • Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to ensure there are no malicious programs affecting your system's performance.

6. Hardware Issues:

  • Since you already tried a different keyboard, if the issue persists and you've ruled out software problems, it might be hardware-related, potentially with the audio jack or internal connections. In this case, consider reaching out to HP support for repair options.

Hope this helps resolve your issue.
