Microsoft Windows 11

I am unable to adjust the sound on my laptop. It is on zero and can't be adjusted. The toggle will not move. I have run the sound diagnostic and it says "the speaker, headset, or headphone is unplugged."

Hi @dncmg,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a hardware issue with your laptop's audio output, or potentially a software issue causing it to not recognize the audio output device correctly. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Check physical connections: Make sure that your headphones or speakers are properly plugged into the audio jack. If you're using Bluetooth headphones or speakers, ensure they are connected properly to your laptop.
  • Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve software issues that may be causing the problem.
  • Update audio drivers: Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can cause issues with sound output. You can try updating the audio drivers through the Device Manager in Windows. Right-click on the Start menu, select Device Manager, expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section, right-click on your audio device, and select "Update driver".
  • Check audio settings: Sometimes, audio settings can get misconfigured. Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, select "Open Sound settings", and ensure that the correct output device is selected.
  • Run the Windows troubleshooter: Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can help diagnose and fix common problems, including audio issues. You can access them by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Playing Audio.
  • Check for physical damage: Inspect the audio jack and cable for any signs of physical damage. If there's any damage, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
  • Test with different headphones or speakers: If possible, try using a different set of headphones or speakers to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem lies with the audio output device itself.
  • Check for software conflicts: Sometimes, third-party software or conflicting drivers can cause issues with audio output. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed software to see if it resolves the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
