I bought a laptop from HP in January 15, and I am losing sound each time it comes out of sleep mode. HP support is busy 4 days with chatting to find a fix, but issues persist. They let me reinstall Windows, but the problem persists. Now they want me to send my laptop for repair, who knows how long it will take. I will never, never buy anything from HP again because even support let me down, they can't do remote, they don't call me but need to stay on chat all the day and I keep waiting and waiting. I am still paying my laptop :'(

Hi @VESNA4

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I truly understand how discouraging it feels to lose sound every time your laptop wakes from sleep, especially after you’ve already invested time reinstalling Windows and working through multiple chat sessions.

Thank you for your patience and for the steps you’ve already tried—it shows real persistence. Let’s focus on some clear actions you can take right now to restore audio without needing to wait endlessly.

Step 1: Check Audio Drivers

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right‑click your audio device (often Realtek or Intel Smart Sound) and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.

If Windows doesn’t find anything new, you can manually install drivers from HP’s support page for your model:
HP Laptop 15s-fq3009ni Drivers

Step 2: Run Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Scroll down and select Troubleshoot.
  3. Follow the guided steps to detect and fix sound issues.

Step 3: Adjust Power Settings

  1. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Next to your selected plan, click Change plan settings.
  3. Choose Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep and set it to Off.
  5. Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Off.
  6. Save changes and test if sound remains after waking from sleep.

Step 4: Reset Audio Services

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  3. Ensure both are set to Running and Startup type is Automatic.
  4. If stopped, right‑click and Start them.

Step 5: Test with HP App

  1. Install or open the HP App on your laptop.
  2. Add your device and select Diagnose & Fix.
  3. This will scan for driver, service, and configuration issues automatically.

These steps should help stabilize sound after sleep mode. If the issue continues even after driver updates and power adjustments, it points to a deeper hardware or firmware interaction, but trying these steps first often resolves the problem without needing to send the laptop away.

Thanks for replying @VESNA4

We sincerely thank you for your patience and co-operation during this troubleshooting process.

Thank you for sharing the screenshots and for your incredible persistence. It’s clear you’ve done everything right so far, and I truly understand how exhausting it is to keep troubleshooting without resolution—especially when you're still paying for the device and relying on it daily.

From the screenshots, I can see that:

  • Realtek(R) Audio is disabled in both playback and recording sections.
  • HP Audio Check reports no issues, but also shows the devices as unplugged or disabled.
  • Intel Smart Sound microphone is also disabled.
  • Headphones show as not plugged in, and speakers are disabled, which explains the silence after sleep.

Let’s now focus on restoring functionality without needing to send the laptop for service. Please follow these steps carefully:

Step 1: Re-enable Audio Devices

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sounds.
  2. Go to the Playback tab.
  3. If “Speaker - Realtek(R) Audio” is listed but disabled:
    • Right-click it and choose Enable.
    • Then click Set Default.
  4. Repeat the same in the Recording tab for “Microphone Array” or “Realtek(R) Microphone”.

If you don’t see them:

  • Right-click in the blank area and ensure Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices are checked.

Step 2: Reinstall Realtek Audio Driver (Clean Install)

  1. Go to Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click Realtek(R) Audio and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Check Delete the driver software for this device if available.
  4. Restart your laptop.
  5. Download and install the Realtek audio driver from this page:
HP Laptop 15s-fq3009ni Drivers – Audio section (support.hp.com)

Step 3: Prevent Audio from Being Disabled During Sleep

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand System Devices.
  3. Look for Intel Smart Sound Technology OED or similar.
  4. Right-click > Properties > Power Management tab.
  5. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Repeat for Realtek Audio if it has the same tab.

Step 4: Disable Audio Enhancements

  1. Go to Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab.
  2. Select your speaker > Properties.
  3. Go to the Enhancements tab.
  4. Check Disable all enhancements.
  5. Apply and OK.

Step 5: Use HP App’s Diagnose & Fix

  1. Download the HP App:
    HP App for Windows (hp.com)
  2. Open it, add your laptop, and run Diagnose & Fix.
  3. Let it complete all checks and apply any fixes.

If the issue persists after these steps, it may involve a firmware-level interaction between sleep mode and the audio controller. In such cases, a BIOS update can help:

  • Visit the BIOS section of your model’s support page (support.hp.com) and install the latest BIOS version available.

You're doing everything right, and I’m here to help you get this resolved.
