HP Envy
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My HP Envy laptop was forced to update to the latest Windows 10 features this evening. When I restarted it after the update, the speaker audio was incredibly quiet, all panned to the right, and very tiny. I tried testing the speakers within the sound menu, and the L & R sound checks are both working fine, at a normal volume and without the very tinny sound.

I tried a system restore, but it didn't work.

In the High Definition Audio Device menu it says "this device is working properly" but the events tab shows that a new driver (hdaudio.inf) was instaled, then a few minutes later, "request driver install" is listed twice consecutively, with the information both times saying that it "requires further instalation".

The sound is normal when using headphones.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I came across your post and would like to help. I understand that you have an HP Envy series laptop. I read that post the Win10 update, the speaker audio is quiet. The speakers test fine and also the sound through the headphones is good. Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Please let me know the exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Meanwhile, I suggest you to update the audio drivers for your laptop via this link: www.hp.com/drivers

Hope this helps. Let me know how this pans out. Good luck! 🙂

Ah, I probably should have waited to reinstal the drivers before replying the first time! It solved the issue. In fact, I'm not sure if it's just because I've had tinny sound for a few days, but the speakers sound better than ever. Thanks for you help!

You're most welcome. 🙂

I'm glad to know that the issue is fixed. I must say that technical solutions can only be provided. But it was you who implemented them to perfection.

Happy computing!
