So, I've had this laptop for near two years now, and for some reason last night the audio on my hp Laptop 17z-cp200 just decided to start playing at close to max volume even though I had the audio down to 2% I noticed this on YouTube at first and thought it was just an isolated issue with the site, then I went to other sites just to double check and I had the same issue there as well. Also, if it helps, I noticed that this only started happening after I disconnected my headphones from the computer via Bluetooth. Can anyone help me?

Edit: So, I did some investigating, and I found out that for some reason, I can only control the audio output for my laptop in the volume mixer, but now it's the opposite i.e. I set the volume to 2% in the mixer, and now no matter how much I increase/decrease the volume using f6 or f7 it still sounds like it's at 2% volume

Hi @Fryguy7991,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

This issue likely stems from a misconfiguration in the audio settings or a conflict caused by the Bluetooth headphones disconnecting. Here’s how you can resolve the problem.

Reset the Default Audio Output Settings

  1. Right-click the Speaker Icon in the system tray and select "Sounds" or "Sound Settings".
  2. Go to the Playback tab.
  3. Locate your laptop speakers, select them, and click "Set as Default".
  4. Click OK to confirm and test the audio again.

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
  3. Right-click on your audio device (e.g., Realtek or AMD audio) and choose:
    • Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • If updating doesn’t work, select Uninstall device and restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically upon reboot.

Check Volume Mixer

Since you've already identified that the Volume Mixer is affecting control:

  1. Right-click the Speaker Icon in the system tray and select "Volume Mixer".
  2. Ensure all sliders, especially for your default device, are adjusted to appropriate levels.
  3. Test the volume using the F6/F7 keys to confirm they now control the output.

Disable Audio Enhancements

  1. Open Sound Settings.
  2. Select your default playback device and click Properties.
  3. Navigate to the Enhancements tab.
  4. Check the box for Disable all enhancements, then click Apply and OK.

Reset Bluetooth Connections

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Remove your Bluetooth headphones from the list of paired devices.
  3. Restart your laptop and reconnect your headphones.

Run Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Run the Playing Audio troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
