RA864, thank you for all your suggestions and ideas, unfortunately the problem still persisted.

I have, however, managed to fix the issue and thought I would let you know what I did.

You had kindly made the suggestion:

Also make sure both the boxes under "Exclusive Media" are checked.’

I couldn’t see that option but could see ‘Exclusive Mode’ instead and both these boxes were checked so I left them alone.

However, after lots of frustration, I decided to uncheck these two boxes and rebooted my laptop and lo and behold, success!  The sound is now working on all videos including YouTube.

Thank you for steering me towards the solution, I would not have got there without you for sure!

That's great, things like that can drive you crazy. I should have suggested rebooting after any changes anyway, that's a must do.
