Hi @Tinah7

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. If the laptop speakers stopped working suddenly about 45 minutes ago and a restart did not help, let's work through a few HP-focused checks to identify whether this is a Windows audio setting, driver, or hardware-related behavior.

Verify the correct audio output device:

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  • Select Sound settings.
  • Under Output, confirm that the laptop's internal speakers are selected as the active audio device.

Check the speaker volume:

  • Ensure the volume is not muted.
  • Use the keyboard volume keys and confirm the volume level increases on-screen.

Run the HP Audio Check:

  • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows.
  • Select Component Tests > Audio > Run Once.
  • Note any error codes or test results.

Restart the Windows Audio service:

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Locate Windows Audio.
  • Right-click it and select Restart.

Reinstall the audio driver:

  • Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the laptop and allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.

Test with headphones:

  • Connect a wired headset or headphones.
  • Check whether audio works through the external device.
  • This helps determine if the issue is limited to the internal speakers.

If the speakers still remain silent after these checks, please share the exact HP laptop model and let us know:

  • Do headphones produce sound?
  • Is the speaker icon showing a mute symbol or red X?
  • Did any Windows update, driver update, or software installation occur shortly before the audio stopped working?

This information will help us guide the next troubleshooting steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
