Hi @acampbell1731,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP laptop's speakers not producing sound. Let's go through some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.
Check the Basics
- Volume: Ensure that the volume isn't muted and is turned up.
- External Devices: Disconnect any headphones or external speakers.
Check Audio Settings
- Default Device: Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, select 'Open Sound settings', and make sure your laptop speakers are set as the default output device.
- Volume Mixer: Right-click on the speaker icon again and open the 'Volume Mixer'. Make sure all sliders are up and none are muted.
Device Manager
- Press Windows + X and select 'Device Manager'.
- Expand 'Sound, video and game controllers'.
- Right-click on your audio device (usually something like Realtek High Definition Audio) and select 'Update driver'.
- Choose 'Search automatically for updated driver software'.
Check Audio Services
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Look for 'Windows Audio' and 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder'.
- Ensure both are running. If not, right-click and select 'Start'. If they are running, right-click and select 'Restart'.

Run Audio Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select 'Playing Audio' and then 'Run the troubleshooter'.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Reinstall Audio Driver
- Go to Device Manager as described earlier.
- Right-click on your audio device and select 'Uninstall device'.
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the audio driver.
Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click 'Check for updates' and install any available updates.
BIOS/UEFI Settings
Sometimes audio issues can be linked to BIOS/UEFI settings. Check your BIOS/UEFI to ensure that the audio device is enabled.
HP Support Assistant
HP laptops come with the HP Support Assistant tool. Use it to check for driver updates or any hardware diagnostics:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Go to 'My devices' and select your laptop.
- Run any available diagnostics related to sound.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
