HP Spectre x360 Convertible

Hi there,

 

My Spectre x360 Convertible laptop makes a very loud, consistent buzz, seemingly at random, but typically when opening a new program, closing internet tabs, receiving desktop notifications, or restarting.  It can usually be stopped by closing the program or offending internet tab. The sound is not coming from the speakers but instead the right-side vent.  I have video footage but can't upload it, but it would make it more clear  how very loud and jarring the pulse-buzz sound is.  

 

I purchased the laptop in November last year but the problem started a few weeks ago. Perhaps coincidentally, the sound started soon after I accidentally hit the camera-kill switch. I've downloaded the correct drivers, have run diagnostic tests, initiated System Quick and Extensive Tests (which all passed), and searched the community boards for help, but this is clearly beyond my skillset. Please help.  It's such a distracting sound that it makes working from the laptop nearly impossible.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:  
use the following steps:

  • Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

For more information on reducing heat inside your computer, see Reducing Heat Inside the PC.

  • After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps.
  • Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time to access and save any important files before service.

For more information on performing a hard reset, see Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues.

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS might help prevent this error from occurring.

Thank you @Echo_Lake ! I followed your steps starting with the dusting. That didn't do it.  I moved onto the hard reset and that seems to have fixed the issue! No more deafening loud buzzing.  I wanted to wait at least a week before I responded to confirm I was in the clear. Thank you so much for your help.  Great to have a working laptop again!
