Spectre x360 15-ch0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Spectre x360 (which I have had for less than 2 months) is producing an extremely loud beeping from the right-hand side whenever any continuous sound is played by any software (music, films, etc.). The beeping is constant in pitch and volume, and the only way to stop it is by closing the program which is playing sound. This only occurs when using the onboard speakers; there is no issue with playing sound through headphones or over HDMI. The beep volume is unaffected by changes in speaker volume and persists even when the mute button is pressed (although if the speakers are muted before a sound is played, the beeping does not occur). Strangely, the speakers have no issue playing 'short' or intermittent sounds (such as the test sounds played by the Windows troubleshooter or when clicking the audio volume slider) - this beeping only occurs when the computer attempts to play any longer audio.

I have checked and reinstalled audio drivers which has had no effect. This problem appeared seemingly overnight; there were no new programs installed which might have caused it. After various failed attempts to fix it, I was going to resort to using a system restore point I had made around a week before this started, but I discovered that Windows 10 has taken the liberty of deleting all my restore points. The laptop is of course protected with antivirus and firewall, and I have run several virus scans since the problem appeared. Has anyone else encountered this? I am at a loss.

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you uninstall the audio driver from device manager and then download and install it from the below link and test.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp87501-88000/sp87996.exe

Here is how it is done.

Uninstall:

  1. Start Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Device Manager.
  2. Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
  3. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
  4. When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.

NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Many thanks for the prompt response. Unfortunately I tried your suggestion twice this evening and it has not resolved the problem.

Hi, I have the exact same problem, it just started all of the sudden a week ago. Can you please help me?  I also have a HP Spectre X360.

Hello everybody,

I had the exact same issue, but the loud continuous beep came from the left front speaker of my spectre x360 ch004ng.

What the problem was:

Loud continuous high pitch sound from the left front speaker, everytime any sound was playing.

Not dependent on the volume.

It started everytime any sound was played, no matter how long the sound sample was. If for example a notification sound from a messagebox was played: an approximately 20 sec beep played. For continuous music: The beep did not stop until the music was stopped + approx. 20 seconds after I closed the playback program.

What I tried:

  • Deactivating the hardware in the device manager stopped the beeping, but of course no more sound was hearable at all
    > did not work
  • Uninstalling (with and without checking "delete the driver software for this device") and subsequently reinstalling the sound driver
    > did not work

What actually fixed the issue:

I made a bios update 2 weeks or so earlier, which I replaced again with the previous version. Everything works fine again.

To do so: Press ESC during startup > Select "system diagnostics" from the menu > BIOS > Rollback to previous version
