Microsoft Windows 11

Spectre x360 has begun to make a loud static sound. Sound comes from the front left corner (the one closest to me when the laptop is open). Seems to be connected to audio because it makes the sound when opening tabs or apps that use audio. Haven't made any updates or instillations. Computer says there's no updates to make.

I've seen other discussions with a similar issue and have tried the troubleshooting in them, but nothing's worked. Anybody else have this problem?

Hi @Faitz,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The loud static sound you’re hearing from your HP Spectre x360 could be caused by several issues, particularly related to audio drivers, hardware, or electrical interference. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Update/Reinstall Audio Drivers:

Even if Windows says there are no updates, the drivers could still be corrupted or outdated. Try the following:

Uninstall audio drivers:

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
  3. Right-click your audio device (likely Realtek or Intel Audio), then select Uninstall Device.
  4. Check the box that says Delete the driver software for this device, if available.
  5. Restart the computer. This should reinstall the audio drivers automatically.

Manually update drivers:

  1. Go to the HP Support website, and find the audio drivers for your HP Spectre x360 model.
  2. Download and install the latest version of the audio drivers.

Check for Electrical Interference:

Since the sound seems to be tied to opening apps or browser tabs, it could be caused by electrical interference from the motherboard or speakers. Try:

  • Disconnecting any peripherals (USB devices, charging cable) and see if the static persists.
  • Using the laptop on battery power to see if the sound changes or stops.

Disable Audio Enhancements:

Some audio enhancements can cause distortion or static sounds.

  1. Right-click the sound icon in the system tray and select Sounds.
  2. Go to the Playback tab, right-click your default audio device, and choose Properties.
  3. Go to the Enhancements tab, check Disable all enhancements, and click Apply.

BIOS Update:

While your laptop shows no available updates, you can manually check for any BIOS updates from the HP Support website. Sometimes, BIOS updates can fix audio or electrical issues.

Test with External Speakers/Headphones:

Connect a pair of headphones or external speakers and see if the static persists through them. If the sound is clear in external devices, the problem may be with the internal speakers or audio wiring.

Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics:

HP provides a built-in diagnostics tool to check for hardware issues. To run it:

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press F2 repeatedly to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  3. Run an audio test to check for any hardware problems related to the speakers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
