HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14m-ba1xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Trying to use voice commands, so started speech recognition. In mic setup, I chose the microphone array since I'm not using a desktop or headset. Went through the setup and a small popup appeared. I keep telling it to "Start Listening," but it immediately goes to sleep.  That's as far as I can get. Have I missed something?

@Nilla_Willa

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂

Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion x360 14m-ba011dx notebook. I read that the internal mic is not working and the laptop goes to sleep mode when trying to use it. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

To assist you better, I would like to know the following information:

  • Was the mic working fine before?
  • Did any software changes or updates happen after which this issue started?

While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

The microphone you want to use might need to be set as the default microphone. Follow these steps to set your microphone as the default microphone:

  1. Search and open sound in Windows.

  2. From the Recording tab of the Sound window, select the port that you want to use. There could be one or more ports.

  3. If the device you want to use contains a small circle with an arrow pointing down, the device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click the device name and select Enable.

  4. Click Set Default to make this device the default audio input device.

  5. Click OK to make the changes.

The volume for the microphone might be muted or turned down, making the computer appear unresponsive to the microphone. Use the following steps to check the speaker volume levels for the microphone:

  • From the Recording tab of the Sound window, select an internal microphone, then click Properties.
  • The Microphone Properties window opens.

  • Click the Levels tab.

  • If the Mute  button is on, click it to turn off mute. The Volume button should show as a blue speaker without the red circle  .

  • Use the slider bar to raise the Microphone level to at least 75.

  • If Microphone Boost is available, adjust to +20.0 dB.

  • Click OK.

Testing a microphone using Voice Recorder (Windows 10):

  1. In Windows 10, search for and open Voice Recorder.

    The recorder opens.

  2. Click the microphone icon to start the recording. Then, speak into the microphone.

  3. When finished recording, click Stop Recording in the center of the blue circle.

  4. Right-click Recording, then select Open file location.

The recording is automatically saved to Sound recordings in your Documents folder.

  5. Double-click the filename of your recording. When the Groove Music app opens, click the Play icon ( ) to listen to the recording.

If the recording still does not take place then let us update the audio drivers using the below steps:

  • In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.

  • Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.

  • Right-click the name of the sound hardware and select Update Driver Software.

Please restart the laptop once.

If the issue persists then update the BIOS on your laptop via this link: https://hp.care/2B3MVQS

NOTE: The charger must be connected until the BIOS update is complete to avoid any power interruptions due to battery draining out.

I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Let me know how it goes.

Good luck! 🙂
