Hello HP support team, just purchased this brand new laptop, currently it is in it's vanilla state, nothing additional installed.

Just want to highlight that I have been hearing static through the headphone, and I might have discovered it could be due to plugged in USB devices adjacent to the headphone jack. Currently I have a mouse and external fan plugged in the USB port adjacent to the headphone jack.

If I move both the external fan and mouse USB to the port on the opposite side of the laptop, then I no longer hear the static, regardless of the volume setting.

I've been seeing several user feedback on this issue, hope this helps. Would be great if there is a solution to eliminate the static.

Hi @Exolectrik,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with the static noise coming from the headphone. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

  • Did you try to update the audio drivers from device manager?
  • Did you try with a different headset although this headset works on a different device?
  • Did you check the playback options in audio settings for the headset?

For now please try these steps:

  • Please connect a different wired headset and check again.
  • Right click on the “Volume icon” on the bottom right corner.
  • b) Select “Recording devices”.
  • c) Under the “Recording” tab right click on the white empty space and check the box that says, “Show disabled devices” and “Show disconnected devices”.
  • d) Right click on “Stereo Mix” and “Enable” this device.
  • e) Highlight “Stereo Mix”, click on “Properties” and go to the “Listen” tab.
  • f) Check the box "Listen to this device", also change the drop-down box below "Playback through this device" to be your second audio device.
  • g) To verify that you've done this correctly, go back to the sound dialog tab “Playback”, you should now see both of your audio devices showing the little green graphs moving.

  • If this does not fix the issue try these steps:

Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers. Check the box that says delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the bios, chipset and audio drivers from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers please select the country and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Then check if this does the trick for you.
  • If the issue continues, please follow all the steps from this link: HP PCs - Resolving Headphones and Headset Problems (Windows 😎  for troubleshooting headset related problems. Although this document is for Windows 8, the steps are relevant for Windows 10 as well.
  • Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

I hope this should do the trick. Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.
