I was trying to increase the sound. I clicked on something and made it 100 time worse. The sound is a horrible excremely loud screeching noise that will only go off when the computer is totally turned off. I tried to go back in and follow the troubleshooting but again it gave me a choice and I chose the wrong one and again the horrible sound started. I could not shut the computer down fast enough. Has that happened to anyone else? If so I will be eternally grateful for any assistance. Thank you

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂
Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.
I understand that you have an HP Envy TouchSmart 15 series laptop and it makes a loud screeching noise that will only go off when the computer is totally turned off. Not to worry, I'll be glad to assist you with this case.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- What is the exact laptop model number. This link will help in finding the model number: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00033108
- Did any hardware changes or updates happen on the notebook recently?
- Do you have external speakers to connect to the notebook and check if the audio is alright?
- Does the loud noise appear as soon as you power on the laptop or only when you play something?
While you respond to that. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Power off the laptop.
- Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
- Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
- Power ON the laptop.
Let us run a hardware test on the audio by following the below steps:
- Shutdown the laptop.
-
Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
-
On the main menu, click Component Tests.
Figure : Selecting Component Tests from the main menu
-
The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.

Audio Test - The Audio Playback Test checks your system to make sure the audio device is functioning properly. During the test, a few music notes are played in sequence and then repeated. This test takes 1 minute to complete.
To run the test, click Audio, and then click Run once. Choose either the speakers or the headphones. When asked, enter the number of notes you heard.
I the loud noise appears while running the hardware test then it indicates towards a hardware issue. However, if the audio test passes then you may perform the steps from the HP troubleshooter guide which helps in fixing most of the audio issues. Click here to access the HP audio troubleshooter guide.
I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Let me know how it goes.
All the best! 🙂
