Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11

(Let me say that I've had this laptop for two and a half years and remain a complete "beginner". I've ignored HP's website because it's so difficult to move around and understand; and  not at all "user-friendly". )

For many months I've been anxious to use headphones with the laptop (running Windows 11 with the latest updates) but simply plugging various headphones into the 'phone socket does not work. Do I need to modify the HP's software? Also, I would be grateful to know if an extension speaker can be used, perhaps plugged into the USB port? Is there any particular sort of speaker that would be required?

I look forward to your advice and thank you in anticipation.
