Microsoft Windows 11

Saludos!

@Caro379,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

This issue is usually caused by Windows managing audio on a per-app basis, or how the system processes communications apps like Zoom versus standard system playback. When system audio or recording app volume sliders are set independently from the master volume, it causes the recorded track to sound extremely faint even if the computer's speakers were blaring at 100% during the session.

The following steps resolve low playback and communications volume on an HP computer running Windows:

1. Fix the App Sliders in the Volume Mixer:

Windows controls the playback volume of specific apps individually. If the screen recorder app or Zoom is turned down inside the mixer, the audio remains quiet.

  • Open the screen recorder or join a quick Zoom test meeting so the apps are actively running.
  • Right-click the Speaker icon in the bottom-right taskbar corner and select Open Volume Mixer.
  • Scroll down to the Apps section.
  • Look for your screen recorder (e.g., Snipping Tool, OBS, Xbox Game Bar) and Zoom.
  • Ensure their individual volume sliders are pushed up to 100% and that they are not muted.

2. Change Windows Communications Behavior:

By default, Windows intentionally lowers the volume of other sounds by up to 80% when it detects "communication activity" like a Zoom call.

  • Open the Windows search bar, type Control Panel, and open it.
  • Select Sound to open the Sound Control Panel.
  • Click on the Communications tab at the very top.
  • Change the setting from "Reduce the volume of other sounds" to Do nothing.
  • Click Apply and then OK.

3. Disable "Audio Enhancements":

HP laptops frequently come bundled with third-party audio software (like Bang & Olufsen or Realtek Audio Control) that applies processing filters. These filters can heavily compress or distort audio outputs, causing low gain staging on video playbacks and streaming apps.

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  • Click on your primary active Speakers/Headphones under the "Output" section to view their properties.
  • Locate the Audio enhancements dropdown menu.
  • Switch it from Device Default Effects to Off.
  • Try running a fresh screen recording to see if the playback audio level normalizes.

4. Check Zoom's Internal Audio Settings:

Zoom has an internal audio engine that can conflict with your system's master volume.

  • Open the Zoom app, click your profile picture, and open Settings.
  • Go to the Audio tab on the left panel.
  • Under Speaker, ensure the correct output hardware is selected and drag the internal volume slider all the way to the right.
  • Under Microphone, if other people say you sound quiet, uncheck Automatically adjust microphone volume and manually slide the input volume higher.

For a detailed walk-through on managing hidden app sliders and testing output priorities within Windows sound properties, you can watch this quick YouTube tutorial video: How To Fix HP Laptop Volume Too Low (Quick FIX).

If the volume is still too low, please share:

  • Which screen recording software is being used (e.g., Windows Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, OBS)?
  • Does the audio sound completely normal when playing a standard YouTube video or music file?

Kind Regards,
