I have an HP x360 2 in 1 laptop. I've been having a problem with my audio off and on for months. The black sound bar that comes up when you change the volume on the computer is permenately stuck on screen with an x at the bottom to indicate it's on mute. The light on the mute key is always on. As a result, the sound doesn't work on my computer. I have tried EVERYTHING to get the mute to turn off to no avail.

Hi @Robertdlrjr1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already attempted various troubleshooting steps. However, let's go through some common solutions for audio issues on a laptop.
- Check the Physical Mute Button: Ensure that the physical mute button on your laptop is not stuck. Sometimes, the physical button may get stuck in the pressed position, leading to constant muting. Press and release the mute button to see if it resolves the issue.
- Keyboard Shortcut: Try using the keyboard shortcut to unmute the sound. This is often done by pressing the "F1," "F2," or another function key along with the "Fn" key. Look for a speaker icon or mute symbol on the appropriate key.
- Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware and software glitches. Restart your laptop and see if the issue persists.
- Update Audio Drivers: Ensure that your audio drivers are up-to-date. You can go to the HP support website, enter your laptop's model number, and download the latest audio drivers for your system.
- Device Manager: Open Device Manager, find your audio device, right-click on it, and choose "Update driver." You can also try uninstalling the audio device and then restarting your laptop to let Windows reinstall the drivers.
- System Restore: If the issue started recently, you can use System Restore to revert your system to a point where the audio was working correctly.
- BIOS/UEFI Update: Check if there's a BIOS/UEFI update available for your laptop on the HP support website. Updating the system firmware can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.
- Run Windows Troubleshooter: Open the Windows Settings, go to "Update & Security," and then "Troubleshoot." Run the troubleshooter for audio problems and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Check for Software Conflicts: Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with the audio settings. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. If the problem is resolved in Safe Mode, you may need to identify and uninstall the conflicting software.
- Reset Audio Settings: In the Windows Sound settings, you can try resetting the audio settings to their default values.
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with your laptop's audio system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
