I tried everything, updated everything but nothing seems to work.

The laptop is just as loud at volume 2 as it is at 100. Nothing changes when I adjust the volume, only the mute works. It speaks at a uniform tone anyway. And the microphone doesn't work that well either.
If I connect an external microphone, it doesn't detect it, nor does the headset. I can't talk on Zoom or other things because the system's built-in microphone doesn't work either.

Hi @VandaDodo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your laptop’s audio volume does not change, mute is the only control that works, and both the internal and external microphones are not functioning or being detected. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm this is not an application-specific issue
Open System Sounds or play audio from a basic source (Windows test sound or a local MP3).
If volume stays the same everywhere, this confirms it’s a system-level audio problem.

Check the correct playback device is active
Go to Sound Settings → Output and confirm the internal speakers are selected as the default device.
If the wrong device is selected, volume changes may have no effect.

Disable audio enhancements (very common cause)
Open Sound Settings → Device properties → Additional device properties → Enhancements.
Check Disable all enhancements, apply, then restart the laptop.

Verify audio services are running
Open Services and confirm Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder are both running.
Restart both services to reinitialize volume and microphone control.

Check driver type (important)
Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers.
If you see High Definition Audio Device instead of the manufacturer’s audio driver, volume control often breaks.

Reinstall the audio driver cleanly
In Device Manager, uninstall the current audio driver and check Delete the driver software for this device if available.
Restart the laptop and install the latest audio driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page.

Confirm microphone permissions
Go to Privacy & Security → Microphone and ensure microphone access is enabled for the system and apps like Zoom.
If access is blocked, neither the internal nor external microphone will work.

Test microphone input device selection
In Sound Settings → Input, confirm the correct microphone is selected.
If no microphones appear, this confirms a driver or hardware initialization failure.

I hope this helps.
