Hey, not really sure what's changed since my original post but the problem has since resolved its self. May have been due to some background updates I'm not really sure. Hope it's resolved soon for you

I have the same problem.  The key here is that little pop-up "B" that shows up before you lose the volume.  That's the BeatsAudio logo.  It inflicts itself on you if you accidentally hit Function + B.

If the volume drops, try Fn + B and notice you get the "B" and the slash-B thing.  Try it a few times and see if that fixes your issue.
