Envy 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I've had HP Envy 15 for over 4 years. Last few days it has been behaving very weird.

When I'm listening to music through my headphones, the sound cracks and stops and it goes through speakers sometimes, then it goes back to the headphones, then the speaker again etc. So it keeps switching sounds between the headphone and the speaker.

I reset the windows, updated, removed, reinstalled sound drivers, did the troubleshooting but nothing works.

When I plug in the headphone and press the volume icon on the taskbar, it recognizes that Communication Headphones have been plugged in, but it still says 'Speaker' as the sound output, when it's not.

Listening to music has become almost impossible due to random switching of the sound. Can somebody please help me?

@Tornike

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Well, if you put it that way, with the beeps and other noise,

You are right to say that it's a possible hardware malfunction and the best way forward is to Contact HP and set up a repair/replacement service order:

HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:

* Open link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/

* Enter Product number or select to auto detect

* Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

* Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get a Case & phone number.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

If you would like to thank me for my efforts to help you,

@Tornike

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

As I understand the speakers and headphones sound switches between each other on its own,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you disable the stereo mix?

Or the front panel Jack detection?

If not, here's what you need to do:

Check the 'Disable front panel jack detection' option:

  1. Double-click on the Realtek HD Audio manager system tray icon

  2. Click on small folder icon

  3. Check that the 'Disable front panel jack detection' tick box is unticked.

  4. Now insert the jack plug of either a microphone or headphones into the corresponding front panel socket of your computer.

  5. If you now see the message 'Information: A jack has been plugged in', then you do not need to change this setting as your system has an HDA compatible front panel.

  6. If you do not see this message, then click on the small folder icon again and tick the 'Disable front panel jack detection' check box.

If any of the above options are unavailable, install the latest drivers for you audio adapter and then try again: Click here for the drivers

I don't have the Realtek HD Audio manager. I tried to download it but it was somehow unsuccessful.

the only sound drivers I have in device manager are IDT High Definition audio and High Definition Audio Device.

@Tornike

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand your concern and I recommend you look for options such as the "Disable front Panel Jack detection" under your IDT High definition audio as well, if it's not visible or available, you may continue to the device manager, Right-Click on the audio driver (IDT) and select uninstall, then restart the computer for it to install a fresh copy of drivers automatically.

Once done, it should resolve the issue, however, if the issue issue persists, go back into the audio properties, recording/playback - look for stereo mix and toggle on/off, to check if that fixes the issue.

I did it and it worked fine only few minutes, then the headphone sound keeps cracking or something, and when Im not listening to anything i hear weird beeps very often. and I went to Sound from control panel, and as I looked at Communication Headphones as one of my playback devices, it kept connecting and disconnecting. and the weird beep I kept hearing was actually the headphones getting connected and then disconnected.

is it possible that there is a problem with hardware?
