I have been asked to look at my girlfiends laptop. So after starting up and finding my audio not working, I set off researching what could of gone wrong. Which has finally lead me to seeing that my windows audio service will not start with the error message being 'access is denied', along with the error code. I'm usually pretty good at solving pc problems for myself and my friends, but this has me stumped.
What i have tried:
- unistalling the audio driver and reinstalling it, changed nothing
- checked to see if im local computer admin, i am
- checked windows services permissions inside the registry (i did not change the registry in any way), both system and admin access
- checked the dependencies, they are running fine
- tried the methods that were applicable from the virtual agent, none worked
- the computer has been rebooted a number of times
- was not able to enter bios even when spamming esc, f2 or f12 (also puzzled me, but i didnt try to hard)
The last time this machine was working was before the minor windows update kb4100347. the last major update being windows 10 version 1803.
Hoping to hear some good news and advice, many thanks in advance,
M

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.
- On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke the Run box.
- Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services window:
- Click Windows Audio, then Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio, then select Properties.
- Set the Startup to Automatic. Then click Apply > OK.
- Restart these two services and set the Startup types to Automatic through the same method 4) & 5):
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Multimedia Class Scheduler - Try to play a music or a video to see if the audio works.
If you continue facing the issue, then I recommend you follow the below steps and rollback the audio driver.
Here is how it is done.
- Press Windows key + X
- Click Device Manager
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers
- Right click your audio adapter
- Click Properties
- Click the Driver tab and click on rollback.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
