Hi @LoanNerd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop’s audio device is missing from Device Manager and you’re getting no sound, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

Check Hardware Connections

  • Ensure the laptop’s audio jack is not damaged. Plug in headphones to see if sound works through them.
  • Restart your laptop to rule out temporary issues.

Run the Windows Troubleshooter

  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar.
  • Select Troubleshoot sound problems and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
  • Look under Sound, video and game controllers. If you don’t see any audio devices listed:
    • Click on Action in the Device Manager menu.
    • Select Scan for hardware changes to see if it detects the missing audio device.

Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  • If the audio device is listed but not functioning correctly:
    • Right-click the audio device in Device Manager.
    • Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • If it’s not listed at all:
    • Go to the HP support website and download the latest audio drivers for your specific laptop model.
    • Install the driver manually.

Check Windows Sound Settings

  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
  • Under Output, make sure the correct device is selected.

Check BIOS Settings

  • Sometimes, audio devices can be disabled in the BIOS.
  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10, Esc, or F2 during startup).
  • Look for audio-related settings and ensure that the audio device is enabled.

Perform a System Restore

  • If the issue started recently, you can try restoring your system to a point when the audio was working.
  • Search for System Restore in the Start menu and follow the instructions.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Sometimes, updates include important drivers and fixes.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
