I bought this laptop a couple of years ago for the DTS sound. The last HP I had used the original DTS Theaters Sound controls, this computer uses the HP replacement. The issue is that the audio enhancements are disabled ONLY when I have headphones plugged in. I am hearing impaired, and I need the voice clarity setting. Enhancements are NOT disabled when using the internal speakers. Several HP updates delete the sound controls. I had to have HP stop the particular update that was already done in bios that keeps killing this program. I simply need the audio enhancements to work with headphones plugged in. headphones plugged in. The moment I unplug them, the enhancements are enabled again. This has to be a glitch that has been present since day one. I have reloaded this machine once, hopefully to solve the problem, the reload did not fix the issue.

@Br549wd40 Welcome to HP Community!
I understand that audio enhancements disabled with headphones.
Check those headphones with an alternate device such as a Smartphone, laptop, etc...
If they work on the alternate device, check if the Headphones are enabled as a playback device.
To do this, please see the steps below:
-
Click the Start Pearl and then type Sound in the Start Search Box.
-
Select Change Sound Card Settings in the Start Menu Options.
-
Next, under the Playback Tab, right click and select Show Hidden Devices and Show Disconnected Devices if available.
-
Select Headphones and enable
To Increase the volume on your headphone:
Method 1
-
Right-click the volume icon in the notification area.
-
Click Open Volume Mixer and increase the volume for Headphones.
Method 2
-
Right-click the volume icon in the notification area.
-
Go to Playback devices and right click Headphones under Playback.
-
Go to Properties and set the volume to the maximum under Levels tab.
-
Click Apply and OK.
Try updating the computer, this will install the latest updates -
Step 1 Windows Updates -
1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.
Step 2 Install updates using HP Support Assistant
- In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant.
- Check for updates.

Have you tested with different headphones?
Meanwhile, I recommend you uninstall the audio driver from the device manager and then download and install it from the below link.
